Books for Kids with Gay Parents: Must Reads

Families Like Mine

Families Like Mine: Children of Gay Parents Tell It Like It Is
by Abigail Garner

There isn’t nearly enough books for kids with gay parents but thank goodness there are a few, this one in particular. It’s a book that is from a new perspective. Garner was raised in a gay household with not one but two dads and has worked with gay and lesbian families for years now. She’s also heterosexual so straight kids will have another level on which to relate to her and her writing. This is a fabulous book for teens, parents and teachers too.

How It Feels To Have A Gay or Lesbian Parent

How It Feels To Have A Gay or Lesbian Parent: A Book by Kids for Kids of All Ages
by Judith E. Snow

Another excellent book for kids with gay or lesbian parents. It’s great for kids in grade 5 or up and it is all about how it feels to grow up in a same sex household. It’s told from the perspective of 32 different people between the ages of 7-31. It’s powerful and all 100% true.

It will help your kids see that no matter what it is they are feeling they aren’t alone and this in itself will show them that it’s okay to share their opinions and thoughts. There is also plenty of tidbits of advice to help your son or daughter cope with issues outside of the home as well, issues such as homophobia.

Both of these books are written for children of gay parents and if I were you, I’d put them both on the must read list for the whole family.
