Crunching the Numbers on Same Sex Marriage Opposition

gay marriage poll

We all figured, at least I did, that older people tend to be more conservative. This newer generation is more tolerant and gay friendly and to prove this fact CNN did a poll. The timing was good considering all the controversy swirling around whether gays and lesbians should be permitted to marry in the various states of the union.

According to their poll the opposition to gay marriage is centered in those who are 65 years of age and older. On the whole, 54% of people polled said that they think same-sex marriage should be illegal, compared to 44% who were for gay equality and who felt that gays and lesbians should be allowed to legally marry.

Here are the numbers crunched and laid out according to age of those polled:

* Of those 18-34, 58% support same-sex marriage
* Of those 35-49, 42% support same-sex marriage
* Of those 50-64, 41% support same-sex marriage
* Of those 65 and over, only 24% support same-sex marriage

On top of that 49% of those polled said they have at least one family member or close friend who is gay. Then there is the 58% of people aged 18 to 34 that say they have a family member or close friend who’s gay. That drops to only one in three of people 65 years old and up.

The old people of the US better hold onto their hats because once we (the new generation, not necessarily gays) take the reins things are going to change in a big way. Finally people all over the country will have the same rights and privileges, regardless of their ethnicity, skin color or sexual orientation.
