LW133Did you ever sing that “I can paint a rainbow” song when you were a kid? You know, the one that goes red and yellow and blue and green, purple and orange and pink, I can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow too? Or am I older than I think? Anyway, what I loved about that song was the feeling of security it gave me, so it’s kind of apt that the lesbian flag (and gay flag) is a rainbow design.

Originally designed in 1978 by Gilbert Baker, an artist from San Francisco, the rainbow gay flag has become synonymous with the Gay Pride Movement, and as such has been adopted by both lesbians and gays (as well as transgenders and bisexuals) as one of the official acknowledgments of a strong belief in gay pride.

QL100LTaking it one step further is the cool jewelry you can buy to celebrate both the flag and Gay Pride as a whole. Some of my personal favorites include ID tags – one particularly funky design has a squiggle, like a snake, with the rainbow colors running through it. Although I also have to say that I’m quite taken with the “Butch Bitch” tag too, made me giggle!

LW113There’s a pretty neat watch that you can buy too, that really stands out on your wrist. It’s got the rainbow flag colors running through the whole design, and it just begs for people to look at it and ask you where you got it.

What I really like about the rainbow flag is the fact that you don’t have to be a lesbian, or gay, to fly it – your sexuality doesn’t matter, merely the fact that you recognize being gay as a right. And the jewelry that you can buy from shops or online like the Love and Pride jewelry website really drives that home – I know many straight friends that not only love the designs, but what they stand for, and you can’t ask for much more than that!
