Gay Icons Crash and Burn Baby!

Just read a fab article When Good Gay Icons Go Bad. It’s a definite must read, love their whole site actually, ch-ch-ch-check it out.

To give you the skinny on it, there are (or were) 5 great gay icons, people that seemed very gay friendly for their time and all that jazz, but then fucked it up with stupid shit. I am just going to show you the highlights.

Here are some of the scandals (and again read the actual original article for more details):

WHAT: Alleged anti-gay remarks

People loved her, she really was the Disco Queen and then she opened her pie hole and some pretty shitty remarks came out (allegedly). For example sources say that she claimed AIDS was God’s way of punishing gay for well, for being gay. Gasp!

Now whether she actually said that or not is a source of contention. In fact Donna Summer said that the journalist twisted her words or whatever but, who know? The paper she supposedly said it to refused to retract the story and she then sued them for a whopping $50 million dollars. The whole thing was settled out of course but no one would talk about it.

janet jackson gay WHO: Janet Jackson
WHAT: Duet with noted homophobe Beenie Man

Poor Miss Janet spent some quality time drumming up a single with Jamaican reggae artist Beenie Man back in 2002. Well, she may be a big supporter of equal rights for gays but he sure as shit isn’t.

Here are some lyrics from his songs: “I’m a dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays” and “hang chi chi gal wid a long piece of rope [Hang lesbians with a long piece of rope].” What a gem! I wish I knew his number.

Anyway, once Janet found out about him being a total tool she apologized to the gay community saying she had no idea what a loser the guy really was.

You would think she’d have learned her lesson but noooooo, never a Jackson born that smart. She went on to collaborate with Elephant Man. Who is that you ask? Oh, just another gay hater with lines likes “Queers must be killed!” tsk tsk Miss Janet Jackson. tsk tsk

WHAT: Ambiguous Prop 8 stance

This guy, this “gay icon” I dunno, he is just…is there even a word for it? Anyway, after the whole Prop 8 went down like it did, he says in an interview with USA Today:

“I don’t want to be married. I’m very happy with a civil partnership. If gay people want to get married, or get together, they should have a civil partnership. The word marriage, I think, puts a lot of people off. You get the same equal rights that we do when we have a civil partnership. Heterosexual people get married. We can have civil partnerships.”

BUT YOU DON”T GET THE SAME RIGHTS WITH A CIVIL UNION AS OPPOSED TO REAL MARRIAGE!! Why don’t people get that! Fuck!
