There are many reasons to wear garnet jewelry. First of all it’s the birthstone of January, which makes it the perfect gift for any man or woman born in that month and of course there is the fact that it is significantly cheaper than other birthstones like diamonds and rubies. But there is much more to this stone than it’s looks and price point.
Modern folklores tells us that wearing this birth stone offers safety during travel, protection from snakebites and even loyalty in love. Pretty cool right? It’s also said that garnets help with fertility and healing. This makes it a good gift idea for those you know are trying to conceive or who is going through any type of health problem.
I’ve never understood why people shy away from garnets. I figure it’s probably due to the way the muddy brown ones saturated the market years ago. I think they put people off from this gemstone and that was that. It’s a crying shame really because there are so many wonderful garnets out there, bright clear red ones, deep rich golden stones and even fiery green ones that blaze as hit as any diamond out there. The list goes on, you can also find orange, yellow, purple and even blue.
Don’t let anyone tell you there are no blue garnets. Some things you will read will say there are none, but with the relatively recent discovery on alexandrite in Madagascar there weren’t any. These are the most rare of all the January birthstones and like the others have a pretty wide range of shades.
In daylight Alexandrite has a muddy green or grayish blue tone but take a peek at them in candlelight or incandescent light they have a smoky blue. That and their rarity is why it’s the most expensive garnet on the market today.
With all the shades and colors I can safely say there is a garnet out there for everyone, it’s not just for girls either. You can find tons of beautiful designs of mens jewelry as well that make great use of January’s birthstone.
Ever wonder where the garnet got it’s name? It’s all because of the pomegranate. It’s comes from the Latin name of that deliciously unique fruit. If you’ve ever eaten one you will see why the name is so appropriate, the seeds look like luscious little garnets.

Great post
If gay people can be identified by rainbow jewelry and bumber stickers, is there a way to identify swingers?

Hi great article thanks for sharing. If a person wears rainbow gay jewelry does that mean that that person has homosexual tendencies?
