More Big Names Helping Defeat Proposition 8

defeat proposition 8

Wow. I am so excited to see big names like Levi’s Jeans are helping to defeat California Proposition 8.

Levi Strauss & Co. is as dedicated as we are to put a stop to this ballot to reverse the Supreme Courts ruling on same sex marriages. Chief Executive Officer John Anderson stated that Levi’s has always fought for civil rights and they don’t plan to stop now, no matter what some conservatives may say. I love that they are taking a stand like this and putting themselves out there for what they believe in.

The Levi’s corporation even plans to co-chair with Pacific Gas & Electric to try to get other companies and corporation to defeat Proposition 8 in California. How fantastic is that? It makes be want to go buy new Levis jeans!.

I didn’t know until today that it is nothing new for Levi Strauss & Co. to take a controversial stand like they are with the donation to those wanting to Vote No to Proposition 8. Levis put an end to the racial segregation of its California factories way back in the 1940s, before most any other companies did the same. They were also the first Fortune 500 company to give health benefits to the domestic partners of unmarried Levis workers.

I have to talk about Pacific Gas & Electric a bit more as well. They deserve a shout out too because PG&E donated $250,000 to the campaign to defeat Proposition 8.

As for Levi Strauss they have donated $25,000 to Equality for All. This organization is one of the leading forces in the fight to get people to Vote No on 8 campaign. And on top of that Robert Haas, who is their company’s chairman emeritus, donated $100,000.

The list of big names to donate to the fight against California Proposition 8 goes on to include two labor unions, the California Council of Service Employees and the California Teachers Association. Both of these have donated $250,000. And my new favorite telecommunications company AT&T has given $25,000.

If Proposition 8 is passed it will effectively end our rights to legally marry, putting us back to where we were last year. Why are people still fighting what should be a basic human right, why in this day in age–it’s 2008 for goodness sakes–are people still fighting against equality?
