Instilling a sense of family pride is vital to every member of your family. Children of gay parents need to be raised with awareness of the world on the whole. They should be taught tolerance (as should all kids, but that’s for another post), but they also need to understand that not everyone feels the way they do. To raise kids without them having any awareness as to the names and words they could hear growing up, could cause them even more upset and confusion that they would have to deal with otherwise.
Here are some resources that people can learn from to get [tag]family pride[/tag] in motion. These links will help [tag]children of gay parents[/tag] as well as the moms and dads:
American Civil Liberties Union
This is a great website that you can learn a lot from. It covers such subjects as the rights of gay, lesbian, and transgendered parents as well as being a fantastic resource of current statistics on gay and lesbian parenting. You can pick books from their list of gay friendly publications for both you the parents as well as your children. One of my favorite aspects of the site though, is their directory of conferences and camps.
American Psychological Association
The articles on this part of their site have been assembled by three APA committees:
You will be able to read relevant information on lesbians and gay men as parents, as well as learn of the diversity among lesbian mothers, gay fathers, and their kids. They also have an extensive annotated bibliography that you can use to find other publications for you and the children of gay parents.
Pride Parenting
This is where you will find the latest news concerning family pride and gay and lesbian parenting in general. You will be able to see what others in your situation are going through, what works for them as well as important facts and info on subjects ranging from family life to surrogacy and even foster parenting.
Proud Parenting
Not only will you find helpful tips and information on being a gay, lesbian or transgendered parent on this blog, you will also be able to exchange info with other gay parents. You will have access to the latest and most relevant facts about adoption, community support, foster care, and insemination.
Check out all of the above references to learn more about how to raise happy and fulfilled parents of gay parents today. They are excellent resources.
