Sacha Baron Cohen: The Master of Controversy

I am surprised at how willing Sacha Baron Cohen is to cut certain scenes from Bruno at the request of activist groups like GLAAD. It seems like all you hear these days is how much of the film is being scrapped. There was even something to do with Michael Jackson in some scenes and out of respect of his death, that too is ending up on the cutting room floor.

I wonder if the Bruno movie will be anything like the original cut by the time it hits theaters. It better still be outrageous, I don’t want to see some boring ass movie about a wacked out European gay dude.

It’s not like you’re going in to see a new Sacha Baron Cohen movie thinking it’s going to some kind of sweet sappy film, the guy lives for controversy. That is what he does, he pushes buttons, pisses off some people while making others spew milk out of their nose laughing. That’s why he’s famous.

The thing people need to remember is that he’s not making fun of gay people, he is making fun of everyone from blacks to Jews and even stereotypical rednecks. I find it hard to believe that anyone is going to come away from this movie thinking this is what it is to be gay and I have a feeling that those in the LGBT community who are worried will find in the end that this movie didn’t hurt them at all.

The Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth’s CEO, David Kilmnick, was quoted in a Newsday article as saying, “I think there’s far more of a danger of homophobia being exacerbated by the religious right and elected officials who push inequality.”

He didn’t find Bruno to be offensive; he thought it was funny and said, “If you laugh at ’Family Guy,’ if you laugh at ’South Park,’ all these shows, they really have the message of how ridiculous all this stuff is,” that is the way he sees Sacha Baron Cohen’s new movie.

Rashad Robinson is the senior director of media programs for GLAAD and he has seen the movie. He had a lot to say about it and not all of it was bad, though some certainly was.

He says, “Those of us at the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation who saw ’Brüno’ agreed that it’s not really helpful to try to critique this as a single film.”

It seems to me that the film is very open to interpretation. Some claim it goes to far and in some scenes achieves the opposite of what the filmmakers claim they are aiming for, while others say it makes for the perfect mirror on the way the far right sees the gay community.

Take The Village Voice’s Michael Musto who said, “I thought it was uneven and thin, but very funny, and I loved the various set pieces involving outrageous sex.”

Then there is the Advocate’s arts and entertainment editor, Corey Scholibo who says, “I think it’s a very, very gay movie. I think gay people, when they see this film, are going to feel it’s a movie that was made for them.”

I hope Bruno is as good a movie as the trailers made it look. It take a lot to offend me and a satirical movie is never going to be one of the things that get under my skin. Especially since I have confidence that Sacha Baron Cohen has not set out to hurt the LGBT community in any way.
