Stonewall Riots: The beginning of the Gay Pride Movement

stonewalls riots

Gay bashing is nothing new. Gays and lesbians have been persecuted since the beginning of time and is seems as though the big society stuff, the riots and protests, seem to come in waves. Unfortunately right now we happen to be in the tunnel of one of these waves, but at least now we have a gay pride movement, not like back when the Stonewall Riots happened in 1969.

Speaking of the Stonewall Riots, some say that was the very beginning of the gay rights movement.

It was June 28, 1969 and the police raided the Stonewall Inn for no other reason than it was a gay bar. The LGBT community had had enough at that point and decided it was time to take a stand and they did.

Sylvia Rivera was a transgender rights activist was one of the people who spearheaded the movement. Rivera was also the founding member of two powerful gay rights groups: the Gay Liberation Front and the Gay Activists Alliance.

Gays and lesbians protested and rioted for a few nights following the police raid on the gay bar and this is what is now referred to as the Stonewall riots.

Now gay rights and gay PRIDE is essential to us retaining who we are. We don’t need to be forced to assimilate and climb back into our closets, BS! We need to stand tall and proud so let’s do it!
