It was in the 5th Century when the Celtic cross first hit the scene and it has become one of the most powerful symbols in the world. It has come to signify more than religion, but also a culture that is still largely a mystery. Today, Protestants and Catholics alike use it as an example of Christ-consciousness, but to Irish people who aren’t religious it still holds much meaning, it is part of their heritage that they cherish. No one really knows the origins, there are no facts that have been proven by historical data or archaeological finds.

Of course the romantic tales and legends only add to the appeal of this iconic cross which is why examples like the Irish Blessings Cross Pendant Necklace (pictured on the green background) above are so popular in jewelry trends even today.
A Celtic cross is not likely to be mistaken for a traditional Latin one. The most obvious differences are the Irish knotwork that is often a part of the design as well as the circle around the heart of the cross. Celtic knots are about showing the interconnectedness of everyone and everything in the universe. They can be composed of many different shapes, some believe that each knot has it’s own original meaning but as far as proving that in a historical sense, there is not a lot to work with.

A cross with a circle around the center where the vertical and horizontal lines cross one another. One of the oldest and most universal images in all the history of the world is a cross of equal arms inscribed in a circle. This is generally referred to as a Solar Cross or Wheel Cross, and has been seen on Paleolithic rock art all around the globe. There is no question at all that the symbol is prehistoric. The Solar Cross is understood to be symbolic of the Sun, time and movement. The solstices and equinoxes mark the four parts of the solar year and the four directions.
There is something magical about this popular Irish symbol and if you are shopping for a gift, this is something to look into more. This way you will have a story to go along with your gift.

That gold and silver cross in the post is so beautiful. I’ve always loved Celtic style jewelry. The ancient Celtics and Druids are indeed a mysterious people. Too bad we don’t have written records from their culture. They’re very fascinating. I didn’t know about those other types of crosses, either. This post taught me a few things. Thank you!
