The January birthstone is garnet, a deeply saturated gemstone that looks rich and sophisticated. All the colors of garnet that are out there make me think of luxury instantly. What many don’t yet know is that there are many different types of garnets in the jewelry industry. Almandine Garnet
Almandine is your common everyday kind of garnet, it is by far the most common January birthstone. It ranges from a deep red to a deep brown colored gemstone. This is one of the cheaper garnets, generally the more brown in it the less it will cost. That said, there are some new mines in east Africa that are producing Almandine garnets that have less brown. We are seeing the prettier red to red-orange shades, ones that lack any brown undertones. These garnet birthstones are often cut large and while they are attractive, they tend to have less sparkle than some others like Rhodolite and Tsavorite.
Rhodolite Garnet
Rhodolite is one of the sexiest of all January birthstones. These garnets have a raspberry color that is hard to tear your eyes away from. They can sometimes have a purple hint to them, some are even a lavender shade. They get their name from the gorgeous rhododendron shade of gemstone that was first discovered in North Carolina. The majority of these birthstones come from Africa and they have wonderful clarity, they have sparkle and shine that really grabs the eye.
Tsavorite Garnets
Tsavorite is the most sought after January garnet birthstone. It is a fiercely bright and fiery green stone, the intensity of this garnet is fantastic. It’s a relatively new birthstone, it wasn’t even discovered until the late 1960’s. I think it’s much more gorgeous than the emerald, it is clearer, it doesn’t have the masses of inclusions that emeralds often do. Tsavorite is a better stone all around than the emerald, it’s harder, much more durable and just plain prettier. And if that weren’t enough for you, it is a much rarer stone. No one I know has Tsavorite garnet jewelry yet, I’m the only one and I like it.
